Chapter 1 

2008 STATEWIDE TRAFFIC CRASH STATISTICS 



The following summary of traffic crashes represents only those crashes that have occurred on the State Highway 
System of Missouri in 2008. The information contained in this publication is a summary of the crash reports 
provided to the Missouri Department of Transportation. This publication is possible only through the 
conscientious reporting efforts of Missouri Law Enforcement Agencies. 

These statistics are compiled pursuant to federal law, 23 USC Section 152.

This section deals with the circumstances that contributed to crashes in 2008. The total number of reported 
crashes is somewhat less than the total number of contributing circumstances and the number of drivers because 
each crash could involve one or more drivers and one or more contributing circumstance.

Chavter 1-C : CRASHES BY POPULATION GROUPING 



In this section, crashes are grouped according to the population characteristics of their location. Four (4) 
categories are used: rural, urban (population 5,000 to 49,999), urbanized (population 50,000 to 199,999) and 
metropolitan (population 200,000 or greater). 

Currently, all metropolitan crashes have been included in the urbanized grouping.

Chavter 1-D : CRASHES BY ROUTE MARKING 



In 2008, 0.80% of all crashes occurring on the Missouri Highway System resulted in a fatality and 27.32% resulted 
in an injury. This section separates these total crashes according to the route marking of the highways on which 
they occurred. In 2008, state numbered routes had the highest percentage of total crashes and the highest 
percentage of fatal crashes.

Out of Control crashes accounted for 49.4% of the fatal crashes for 2008. These crashes represented 27.2% of the total crashes. Rear 
end crashes accounted for the majority of the total crashes at 33.3%

Chapter 1-G : CRASHES BY HOUR. DAY AND MONTH 



The hour of 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. was the hour of highest percentage of total crashes. The hour of 6:00 p.m. to 
7:00 p.m. was the hour of the highest percentage of fatal crashes during 2008. 

Friday and Saturday had the largest percentage of fatal crashes at 15.35% and Friday accounted for the 
highest percentage of total crashes at 17.16%. 

October had the largest number of fatal crashes in 2008. December had the largest number of injury crashes and December the 
largest number of total crashes in 2008.

In 2008, 37.7% of the total crashes occurring on the Missouri Highway System were at intersections with public 
roads or streets. These crashes resulted in 24.9% of the total fatal crashes. Interchanges represented 22.1% of 
the total crashes and 12.3% of fatal crashes.

Chapter 1-M : CRASHES INVOLVING PEDESTRIANS 

Pedestrian fatalities decreased 16.0% in 2008 compared to 2007. 

10.4% of pedestrian fatalities and 38.6% of pedestrian injuries occurred during the hours of darkness in 2008. 
The age span of 15-24 years accounted for 24.8% of the pedestrian injuries during 2008. 
The age span of 45-54 years accounted for 28.5% of the pedestrian fatalities during 2008.
